Consequently, to establish academic programs and to gain recognition as a profession, software engineering must have accreditation guidelines. The Software Engineering Education Project, a Software Engineering Coordinating Committee (SWECC) project, became active in 1997 with a mandate to develop accreditation criteria for undergraduate software engineering programs. The criteria—completed by November 1998 and approved by both the IEEE Computer Society and the Association for Computing Machinery—appear to have already significantly affected the accreditation development process. Program Assessment and Program Improvement: Closing the Loop
Engineering Criteria 2000 (EC 2000), the recently revised set of accreditation criteria for engineering programs in the US, places considerable stress on outcomes assessments. EC 2000 requires the assessment results to be used to identify program improvements, and for such usage and the resulting improvements to be documented. While numerous assessment instruments have been developed and discus...
متن کاملRemote laboratories: enhancing accredited engineering degree programs
Remote laboratories have been subjected to considerable scrutiny, as to their place in educational programs, since their original use in the early 90’s. Since this time they have been the focus of academic research, and subsequent reviews, which show that they have potential advantages over traditional laboratories when correctly used. While these advantages are generally understood and agreed ...
متن کاملAnnual Documentation of Assessment and Evaluation of Student Outcomes Simplifies Self-Study Preparation
Electrical Engineering (EE) programs seeking accreditation from the EAC of ABET must demonstrate that they satisfy eight general Accreditation Criteria, plus any program specific criteria. Two of the most challenging and debated criteria are: Criterion 3 Student Outcomes (SOs), and Criterion 4 Continuous Improvement (CI). At the University of Portland, to prepare our EE program for a successful...
متن کاملSession 11a1 Engineering Criteria 2000: The Impact on Engineering Education
Engineering Criteria 2000 or EC2000 is the new set of criteria that Engineering programs must satisfy in order to be accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). While some of the ideas behind EC2000 are certainly likely to have a positive impact on engineering education, others are questionable, and indeed may have a negative impact. The paper attempts to justif...
متن کاملInformation Systems Accreditation: A New Criteria Structure and New Flexibility
The Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) has proposed changes in the structure of the criteria used to accredit information systems programs. The new structure combines so-called “general criteria,” criteria that apply to any computing program, and additional program criteria that apply to IS, IT, or CS programs. This new format allows an emergingcomputing-discipline (e.g., bioinformatics) ...
